The Venue

[The City Barge]

The City Barge is situated alongside the Thames and was a film location in Help! -- The Beatles duck inside after being chased by a band of marching bagpipe players playing Scotland the Brave and order 'two lagers and lime and two lagers and lime'. Ringo's pint seems to be stuck to the bar and when George tips it forward a trapdoor opens and Ringo drops into a cellar where he finds himself being stalked by a tiger. The basement scenes were probably created down the road at Twickenham Film Studios -- the pub doesn't have a basement -- so there should be no risk of tigers gate-crashing our event.

After this, the other Beatles see one of the baddies (Leo McKern) behind the bar and exit the pub by jumping through the windows onto the footpath, but then rush back in with the police to rescue Ringo and everyone ends up singing Beethoven's Ode to Joy.

The towpath outside the pub was also a location in the film A Hard Day's Night. Child actor David Janson meets Ringo here. The two chat, muck around with an old tyre, and Ringo sets up a photograph scene only to drop his camera in the water.
