Green Day, R.E.M, Christina Aguilera, and Snow Patrol are among the best-selling artists who feature on a CD of songs written by John Lennon to benefit Amnesty International. The CD was released globally on 12 June 2007 by Amnesty International and Warner Bros. Records. All proceeds will go towards Amnesty International's human rights work, including the crisis in Darfur.

The album falls under the organisation's Make Some Noise initiative, which uses music to inspire a new generation of activists to stand up for human rights. The initiative is supported by Yoko Ono, who generously donated the rights to the entire John Lennon songbook to Amnesty International.

The album also contains a version of Gimme Some Truth by Bob Dylan's son, Jacob, together with Dhani Harrison -- George and Olivia's son and lead of the band thenewno2.

Jack Johnson, Corinne Bailey Rae, Postal Service and Regina Spektor have all recorded songs for the project, along with many other stars. There will be over 50 tracks available for download altogether.

Music fans can get a taste of the album straight away by downloading R.E.M's version of #9 Dream. Drummer Bill Berry came back from retirement to record the track, marking the first time the four band members -- Berry, vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills -- have been in the studio together since 1997.
