There is a fabulous collection of Beatles photos on show at the St Giles Street Gallery in Norwich from now until October 28. The exhibition, entitled the Eleven Million Dollar Picture Show, comprises a collection of photographs taken by some of the most famous Beatles photographers, as well as some memorabilia.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the Butcher album cover that was owned by John Lennon. The cover is exhibited alongside a handwritten note by John, in which he jokingly quips that the cover should be worth eleven million dollars (hence the title of the exhibition). The note continues with another typical 'John' comment; that his idea for the photoshoot was to decapitate Paul, but Paul wouldn't go along with it! It was wonderful to see, and another fabulous reminder of John's fantastic sense of humour!! At least, I hope he was joking!
The photos in the exhibition cover the Beatles career from the early years in Hamburg to the late 1960s. Work from Astrid Kirchherr, Norman Parkinson, Terry O'Neill, Frank Herrmann, Robert Whitaker, Michael Ward, Harry Benson and Tom Murray is on display, and limited editions of the prints are for sale (although you will definitely need to raid your piggy bank if you want to buy anything).
As an ex-Norwich girl, I can categorically confirm that Norwich is a wonderful place to visit, and while you're there, you should definitely visit the St Giles Street Gallery. The collection is wonderful, and it's a rare treat to see the work from so many gifted and important photographers on display at the same place.
