Free Exhibit of Unseen Beatles Photos in London from Dec 9-Jan16

Incredibly rare and never before seen, new photographs of the internationally renowned rock band The Beatles will be on show in Mayfair’s Shapero Modern this December. These lost photographs were taken on the set of the band’s first film A Hard Day’s Night by Lord Christopher Thynne (1934 – 2017). The negatives remained undeveloped for fifty-seven years but now these re-discovered photographs will re-invigorate Beatlemania. Each of the developed prints are available in two sizes, but strictly limited to thirty-five of each. This exhibition at Shapero Modern will not only highlight the tantalising rarity of the photographs, but will also reveal the moments Thynne found himself through photography, whilst also shedding light on The Beatles’ quieter moments between the international adoration.

Shoot back to early spring, 1964. The Beatles had just returned from their first tour of the United States and were on the brink of their celebrated 1964 World Tour, which sparked a mania and fandom so colossal that the Spectator described it as ‘hysterical’. Man-about-town and well-connected photographer Lord Christopher Thynne was invited to the film set for only two days. The son of the 6th Marquess of Bath, Thynne had been sacked as controller of the family seat in Longleat and was pursuing a more bohemian lifestyle. Thynne was able to capture the charismatic band in candid moments between their worldwide tours that brought on the hysteria and Beatlemania the press described.

One of the most influential music films ever made, A Hard Day’s Night portrayed 36 hours of the band’s life as they prepared for a television performance. Thynne’s effortless shots of the ‘famous four’ capture an even closer insight into their lives, through the lens of a casual guest who was seeking inspiration.

Tabitha Philpott-Kent, Gallery Director, comments, It’s an amazing opportunity to see a rare collection of important, never-seen-before images
.
These unearthed images will be on sale for £400 - £650 for a limited period of time only. As we approach the festive season, these photographic prints will delight Beatles fans across the world and provide a brilliant investment for collectors of art, photography and music memorabilia.

Unique Mike McCartney photographs go on display at Strawberry Field, Liverpool

Strawberry Field Liverpool is excited to announce the opening of Mike McCartney’s photographic journey of the Strawberry Field redevelopment, ahead of his book launch later this year.

Known professionally as Mike McGear, Mike is an outstanding performing artist and rock photographer who was a member of the groups The Scaffold and Grimms.

Mike was persuaded by Lady Judy Martin to chronicle the redevelopment of Strawberry Field. This is his story:

"I was asked by the Salvation Army...well mainly by Lady Judy Martin OBE actually (or Jude as I affectionately call her) to record the demolition of the old Strawberry Field homes and the rebuild of a brand new facility on the same site. At first I was reticent, as it was my brother's group that made the Strawberry Field song famous...not my Scaffold comedy group, but when I discovered the amazing work that the Sally Army (as I affectionately call them) quietly get on with, I agreed to undertake the 2 to 3 year task! The trouble was how do you make the bashing down of old houses and the building of a new bricks & mortar one interesting to the public?! Well...here's a start ! with this mini-exhibition of images to whet your appetite...hope you(s) enjoy! and hope u enjoy the Cafe, and the  Shop...AND the gorge gardens with the original Red Gates! ps if you see a lone Scouser roaming round the grounds in a mask...it's not the Lone Ranger, or Donald Trump...it's ME! Don't 4get to say hello!” said Mike *McGear McCartney BEM

Kathleen Versfeld, Mission Director at Strawberry Field said:

“We are blessed to have the support of such wonderful people as Lady Martin and Mike McCartney. I know our visitors will be delighted to see Mike’s photographs. We can’t wait for the full collection to be made available in his planned book.”

A special exhibition featuring some of Mike’s photographs will go on display in the Strawberry Field centre, alongside the visitor exhibition. The exhibition covers the interwoven stories of the Salvation Army, the children’s home, John Lennon’s childhood and the writing of Strawberry Fields Forever. The addition of the Mike McCartney photographs will offer a unique opportunity to visitors, with a never before seen insight into the redevelopment of the current site. Mike’s book, filled with an inspiring collection of images, will go on sale later this year.

As a special offer to celebrate the re-opening, Strawberry Field’s visitor experience is priced at £7.00 per person until the end of September and under 16’s accompanied by an adult go free. NHS workers and a guest can also visit free of charge. Visitors will be guided around the stunning interactive exhibition where “Nothing is Real” using interactive media guides. The tour continues into the magical gardens where John played as a child, allowing visitors the opportunity to explore, unwind and dream in the place, which inspired one of the 20th century’s greatest songwriters.

All funds generated by the visitor experience go towards funding a Steps to Work programme for young people with learning difficulties and other barriers to employment.

To ensure safety during this time of Covid-19, visits to Strawberry Field must be booked in advance on www.strawberryfieldliverpool.com

Review: Eel Pie Island Museum - Stunning museum for music fans

1960's music fans will be familiar with the name "Eel Pie Island." This Island in the Thames river in Twickenham, only accessible via footbridge or boat, was an unlikely candidate as a site that would change the face of music, but despite this isolation it became famous as a major music venue in the 1960s that launched many successful music careers.

A group of fans representing the British Beatles fan club had an outing in the area last weekend, and we were delighted to discover that there is a wonderful museum in Twickenham dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of Eel Pie Island.

As soon as we heard about it, we made a beeline for the museum to check it out. We were not disappointed! The museum is exceptionally put together. The story of the island comes alive as you explore its history and learn how it played a part in the British Blues scene of the 1960's and of the early beginnings of stars such as The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton. You'll be fascinated to learn how the island has also influenced other genres from jazz through heavy metal. The collection of photos, timelines and memorabilia is interesting and engaging and includes instruments you are not only allowed to touch, but can actually pick up and play.

The curator, Michele Whitby, has created something really special. The museum is currently located on first floor of the Twickenham library on Garfield Road in Twickenham but they are actively seeking a permanent home. There is no fee, but a donation of £2.00 is appreciated to help the museum both continue and find its new home. Together a visit to the Eel Pie Island Museum coupled with a ride on the Swinging 60's Shuttle Bus (see review) makes a perfect day out for music fans.

Beatles replica Höfner guitars to go on display at the Beatles Story for 3 months

Jubilee Guitar
Guitar brand Höfner has loaned four one-off replica guitars used by Paul McCartney and John Lennon to the award-winning Beatles Story in the Albert Dock as part of their 25th birthday celebrations.

The 1964 Vintage 500/1 Bass, the Paul McCartney 500/1 Backup Bass, the Jubilee 500/1 Bass and the Club 40 John Lennon re-issue Guitar will go on display in the Paul McCartney and John Lennon solo rooms in the Albert Dock on 12th June.

These incredible items are on loan to the attraction for three months and each guitar tells its own story.

As The Beatles took the world by storm, conquering the USA in early 1964, every bass player wanted a Vintage 500/1 Bass, just like Paul McCartney’s.

The 1964 example of the bass is very similar to Paul McCartney’s. During 1964 Höfner worked hard to try and keep up with demand for the bass and probably sold more examples of the model that year than any before or since.

In 2009 Höfner were commissioned by Paul McCartney to produce a 500/1 Backup Bass for him. The request was for a bass built to the same specifications as his 1963 model that he uses for all concerts and for recording. It was built to exactly the same dimensions and used the same hardware.

Only two of the Backup Basses were made, one of which is of course with Paul, the other is retained by Höfner for very occasional exhibiting such as this. The bass will never be sold and there are no plans to produce any more.

Thirdly, when her Majesty celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, part of the celebrations included a special Jubilee concert with the headline act being Sir Paul McCartney. Höfner decided that they would produce a Violin Bass with the Union flag sprayed on the top and offer this to Paul for the concert.

Two were made (a backup is always produced) and one of these sent to Paul just before the concert. The photos of Paul McCartney proudly holding the guitar aloft became one of the defining images of the event.

Subsequently a very limited edition of the Jubilee 500/1 Bass was produced and soon sold to collectors worldwide. This bass is the 2nd of the two originally produced. A careful look and you will see just how hurriedly it had to be sprayed in order to meet the deadline for that famous concert! It will never be sold and there are no plans to produce any more.

Lastly, the first electric guitar owned by the legendary John Lennon was a Höfner Club 40, bought on hire purchase from Hessy’s music shop in Liverpool in 1959. Prior to this he had played an acoustic but clearly needed something that could be amplified so he pestered his Aunt Mimi until she agreed to accompany him to buy a guitar. She put down a £17 deposit and co-signed the hire purchase agreement and John came home with a shiny new Höfner.

This guitar is a limited edition (120 examples) re-issue of the 1959 Club 40 as once owned by John. All have a reproduction of John’s signature on the scratchplate. John kept his Club 40 for about one year and then purchased a Rickenbacker “Capri”. He loaned the Club to Paul for a short while and then he sold it, probably in Hamburg. It has never been seen since.

Martin King at the Beatles Story in the Albert Dock said: “The loan by Höfner is an extremely welcome addition to the Beatles Story and the stories behind each guitar will I’m sure be familiar to Beatles fans and keen musicians world-wide.

“Our visitors will just love these. It is particularly fitting that we have them in a few days before Paul McCartney’s 73rd birthday too. The fact that they are so rare and that they will never be made again will really appeal to Beatles superfans. We’d like to thank Höfner for the loan, we are always looking to add to what we have on offer here and this is an incredible addition.”

Nick Wass Marketing Manager at Höfner GmbH said: “We are delighted to have been invited by the Beatles Story to be part of their 25th anniversary celebrations. We have been associated with The Beatles and the great city of Liverpool for many years and it is brilliant to still be part of this wonderful heritage. Happy Birthday from Germany!”

The Höfner guitars will be on display from 15th June until 12th September 2015 in the solo section of the exhibit in the Albert Dock.

Something new at the Beatles Story - Check it Out!

Little Stevie Wonder’s Cavern Club contract and 60’s
memorabilia goes on display at the Beatles Story

Little Stevie Wonder’s contract to play at the Cavern Club has been loaned to the award-winning Beatles Story in the Albert Dock.

The incredible artefact is dated 7 January 1966, when Stevie was aged just 16 and embarking on his amazing journey to success.

Dave Jones, director of Cavern City Tours, with the newly installed Cavern Club memorabilia at the Beatles Story

Pieces of original Beatles merchandise that were sold at the Cavern Club in the early 1960’s have also been loaned to the tourist attraction by Cavern City Tours and are now on display.

The Cavern Club memorabilia has been re-homed for Beatles enthusiasts to see what was on offer during the height of Beatlemania. The selection of original merchandise includes a Cavern Club pendant and leather chain, a  PVC membership holder, an autograph book and a Cavern Club t-shirt.

Amongst the 12 pieces of merchandise is the original price list which has been included to give visitors to the world famous attraction an understanding of the cost of items on sale over half a century ago.
Another rare artefact that Cavern City Tours has loaned is one of the Beatles Yellow Submarine 33c stamps - believed to be the first American stamp produced in honour of a rock group. The stamp was launched to celebrate the rerelease of the animated film Yellow Submarine at International Beatles week in Liverpool in 1999.

Dave Jones, company director of Cavern City Tours, has also loaned some NEMS (North End Music Stores) items from his own private collection. These include a typed letter to Bob Wooler on NEMS letterhead signed by Brian Epstein dated August 1963, an original 78 vinyl record sleeve with NEMS Walton Road printed on the sleeve and a red and white plastic record sleeve for albums with the addresses of the NEMS Whitechapel and Great Charlotte Street stores printed on it.

Martin King at the Beatles Story in the Albert Dock said: “The loan by Cavern City Tours and by Dave Jones is greatly appreciated by everyone here at the Beatles Story and I am sure the same can be said for the visitors of the exhibition. The Cavern memorabilia and NEMS items will be of great interest to all Beatles fans, both young and old, and the stamp is a rare piece we have not seen before so will I’m sure be a popular piece for our visitors.

“The Little Stevie Wonder contract is a fantastic addition to our attraction and we are very grateful to Cavern City Tours for loaning this to us. We are always looking to add to what we have on display to offer visitors something more and these are all extremely welcome additions.”

Dave Jones, company director of Cavern City Tours, who loaned the artefacts, said: “The Cavern Club collection of artefacts includes a considerable number of items dating from 1957 to the present day.

“As part of The Cavern Club's close working relationship with our colleagues at the Beatles Story we have loaned the exhibition a number of items from the 'Cavern Collection' for display in the exhibition's recreation of the Cavern Club.

“From 1962 onwards The Cavern Club came into the national and international spotlight as a result of The Beatles growing recording success. Many other bands and artists from Britain and the U.S.A wanting to be part of The Cavern Club story started to appear at the Club. One such artist was Little Stevie Wonder whose contract to appear at The Cavern Club can also be seen on display at the Beatles Story.”

All the memorabilia, including the original merchandise, the Beatles U.S postal stamp and Little Stevie Wonder’s contract is now on display in the Beatles Story exhibition’s Cavern Club section.

45 Revolutions by Morgan Howell Exhibit - Proud Galleries

45 Revolutions
 By Morgan Howell
 10th July - 2nd September 2014
 All images © Morgan Howell

This summer Proud Galleries is pleased to introduce 45 Revolutions, an exhibition of supersized original paintings and prints of seven inch singles by artist Morgan Howell. This exhibition will celebrate the golden age of 'the 45' and will feature the most important and iconic single sleeves in 20th century culture.

This unique collection of painted singles is set to rekindle the long-standing love affair between music devotees and vinyl. The seven inch single revolutionised the music industry with its recognisable sound quality and thought-provoking artwork. Everyone shares a memory of the time they bought their first vinyl and the obsessive collecting that inevitably followed. In a digital age where the ease of MP3 has replaced the collectible aura of vinyl, Proud Galleries celebrate the format that gave birth to rock n' roll. Vinyl is the physical and emotional manifestation of our musical choices, defining part of our identities, and act as time capsules to special moments in our past.

Artist Morgan Howell celebrates this nostalgic love affair through his supersized art works. His unique mixed-media paintings are approximately fifteen times the surface area of the classic seven-inch singles on which they are based and he unsparingly captures the essence of each sleeve, recreating every little detail down to the crinkles and creases on each record.

Staged at Proud Chelsea on London's historic King's Road, the very heart of the counterculture movement of Sixties London, the exhibition will delve into the bands that drew their musical inspiration from their surroundings in Chelsea at that time. From The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to David Bowie and The Kinks, this exhibition reveals an insight into the singles that where produced during this period of creativity and freedom that has defined generations of music that followed.

Launch: Wednesday 9th July
Dates: 10th July - 2nd
September 2014
Times: Monday to Sunday: 10am till 7pm
Entry: Free
Address: 161 King’s Road London SW3 5XP
Website: www.proud.co.uk

Morgan Howell
A long-term member of the Royal Society of Art, Morgan Howell came up with the idea for creating these artworks in a moment of genius triggered by the call for entries to the RA Summer Exhibition. He rediscovered his formative years when music was everything and captured its’ essence in a series of ‘supersize’ singles. Each of his painted singles measures 27 x 27 inches, approximately fifteen times the surface area of the original singles on which they are based, unsparingly capturing the essence of each sleeve. Howell’s supersize paintings have achieved a cult following amongst music enthusiasts and his unique paintings of David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” sits proudly on the wall at Sony Music. Further examples of his work are a permanent feature of the Radio 2 Green Room alongside Elton John’s piano, and when the BBC interviewed The Rolling Stones in London’s Dorchester Hotel in the run up to their concerts at the 02 in November 2012, three of his supersize Rolling Stones singles formed the backdrop. Vinyl is making a come-back and British artist Morgan Howell is at the centre of it.
