Location: 50 High Street, Rhyl, Wales

And The Mersey Beatles will be performing - read more here and below

On Saturday July 14, 1962 The Beatles played their first ever performance in north Wales at the Rhyl Regent Dansette. Pete Best was the drummer at the time. (Ringo would replace him in August.)

'Dear John' Free Concert October 9

'DEAR JOHN'

TRIBUTE CONCERT CELEBRATING JOHN LENNON'S 79TH BIRTHDAY

In aid of
WAR CHILD UK

7.30pm, 9th OCTOBER 2019

HARD ROCK HOTEL, MARBLE ARCH
Great Cumberland Pl, Marylebone, London W1H 7DL

On 9th October 2019 musicians and artists from different generations and different genres will come together to celebrate the music, legacy and birthday of Beatle legend John Lennon.

The concert will take place at the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel in Marylebone and all proceeds from it will benefit War Child UK.

Appropriately this significant event is the idea of a millennial musician, Sepp Osley, the founder, songwriter and front man of rock band Blurred Vision.

Sepp himself could have been the face of War Child. He was born in war torn Iran in the mid 80’s, fled the country with his family and spent most of his life in Canada before relocating to London.

Along with his new Blurred Vision line-up, Sepp is bringing together a variety of special guests to perform at the show. The evening is dedicated to one of the world’s most iconic musical heroes - John Lennon - and will comprise a celebration of songs from both Lennon’s solo catalogue and the Beatles.

Reflecting on why War Child means so much to him, Sepp said "There is a great necessity for this incredible charity. They fight for those who have the smallest voice but the greatest of importance. War Child is here to let these children know that they are not forgotten.

Having been born into a time of war and uncertainty myself I am grateful to be able to do my little bit now as an adult. I am also very excited to be able to celebrate my great hero John Lennon whose music first taught me that the things that make us different mean very little in the end.

The only thing that matters is our empathy towards one another and to know that attaining peace is not just a dream but can be our reality, if we want it."

The concert on October 9th is free to the public but fans are encouraged to donate whatever they can online and to register for tickets guaranteeing entry at the following link: http://blurredvisionmusic.com .

Lennon's Banjo partners with Strawberry Fields project

LENNON’S BANJO CHARITY PARTNER
ANNOUNCED AS SALVATION ARMY
IN LEGACY TO BEATLE’S CHILDHOOD

Redevelopment of Strawberry Field, inspiration behind the iconic Beatles’ hit, will benefit from donations
The Salvation Army’s Strawberry Field project has been announced as the official charity partner for the highly anticipated new stage show Lennon’s Banjo, which makes its world premiere in Liverpool this April.

Produced by Pulse Records Ltd in association with Bill Elms, Lennon’s Banjo opens at the city’s Epstein Theatre on Tuesday 24 April, continuing through until Saturday 5 May. Tickets are on sale now.

The Beatles’ original drummer Pete Best, will play himself in three special performances.

Throughout the show’s two-week run, there will be a collection at the end of each performance with all monies being donated to The Salvation Army’s Strawberry Field project.

Demolition work has already started to redevelop Strawberry Field, with the final vision resulting in a training hub for young people with learning disabilities, alongside a visitor centre, cafe and public gardens.

Set in present day Liverpool, Lennon’s Banjo is based on the 2012 novel Julia’s Banjo written by Rob Fennah and Helen A Jones. A mix of fact and fiction, the production will be directed by Mark Heller.

The quest is on to find the holy grail of pop memorabilia – the missing banjo on which John Lennon was first taught to play music by his mother Julia Lennon, who first introduced the youngster to rock and roll.

Strawberry Field was A Salvation Army children’s home for the city’s vulnerable children, set in woodland and near to where John Lennon lived in Woolton. It also played a vital part in Lennon’s formative years – inspiring The Beatles’ 1967 smash hit single Strawberry Fields Forever.

Major Drew McCombe, Divisional Leader for The Salvation Army, North West, explained: “Everybody knows the song Strawberry Fields Forever – but few people know the story behind the song. John had a troubled childhood and for him, Strawberry Field was a place of peace, refuge and a quiet spot where he could climb trees and dream his dreams. He used to jump over the wall into the Strawberry Field grounds, where he would play with the children who lived there and listen to The Salvation Army band.

“Our public fundraising campaign has a target of £2million to ensure our vision becomes a reality. Strawberry Field has the potential to change the lives of young people with learning disabilities who find it difficult to find gainful employment. It is a social injustice that they do not have the opportunities that others have – and we want to change that.

“Our aim now is to weave together educational, cultural, heritage and spiritual exploration in one bold imaginative plan. Visitors will be able to go beyond the famous red gates for the very first time and enjoy the new authentic exhibition, have lunch in the restaurant and relax in the tranquil gardens. We are very grateful that we’ve been chosen as the official charity partner for Lennon’s Banjo, and we wish the show every success.”

Co-producer Bill Elms added: “We are delighted to be supporting the work of The Salvation Army and its inspiring Strawberry Field project. The play centres around John Lennon’s very first instrument, which played a vital role in shaping his musical talent. Equally, Strawberry Field played a huge role in developing John’s creativity and imagination, so we are thrilled that Lennon’s Banjo can give something back to something which meant so much to John.”

Lennon’s Banjo is written by Rob Fennah, who will also co-produce the show. No stranger to theatre, Fennah wrote the stage play adaptation of Helen Forrester’s Twopence to Cross the Mersey which has enjoyed success spanning 20 years.

An eight-strong cast features Eric Potts, Mark Moraghan, Jake Abraham, Lynn Francis, Danny O’Brien, Stephanie Dooley, Alan Stocks and Roy Carruthers.

The Beatles’ original drummer Pete Best will appear as himself in three performances. Pete will appear in the 2.30pm and 7.30pm shows on Wednesday 25 April, and the 7.30pm show on Saturday 5 May. Alan Stocks will portray Pete Best in all other performances during the two-week run.

Lennon’s Banjo’s are delighted to be working with its Fab Four Production Partners who are The Cavern Club Liverpool, The Beatles Story, Hard Days Night Hotel, and The Beatles Shop.

Help Support the transformation of Strawberry Field!

2nd November, 2017
  • Inspirational choir records Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever at Abbey Road to launch campaign to tackle unemployment and isolation among young people with special needs
  • Of one million people with learning difficulties in the UK, 93% are unemployed and 31% have no contact with family or friends
  • The Salvation Army tackles issues within the learning-disabled community by re-opening former children’s home in Lennon’s Strawberry Field as a new training hub
LIVERPOOL, Thursday 2nd November – The Salvation Army today launches a public fundraising campaign to transform Strawberry Field – the former children’s home which inspired John Lennon’s Strawberry Fields Forever – into a training and work placement hub to support young people with learning disabilities.

The Church and Charity needs £2m funding to make this happen.

Over a million people in the UK have a learning disability* and only 7% of that number have a job. 31% have no contact with family or friends, according to research uncovered by the Church and Charity.

To mark the launch of the new campaign, 50 years since the original release of the 1967 classic Beatles song, a choir formed of young people with learning disabilities – all of whom could potentially benefit from the Army’s inspiring plans – gathered at the world-famous Abbey Road studios to create a special version of the iconic song, released online today. The choir was made up from a mix of students from The City of Liverpool College and young people who The Salvation Army work with.

Major Drew McCombe, Divisional Leader for The Salvation Army, North West, said: “Lennon grew up close to Strawberry Field, and gave generously to the home as soon as he got his first pay cheque. He also had a vision for it, expressed in the song, as a place where anybody, whatever their personal background and difficulties, could realise their dreams

“Strawberry Field has the potential to bring that vision to life; changing the lives of young people with learning disabilities, who find it difficult to find gainful employment, as well as encourage more projects similar across the UK. I hope our choir will not only raise awareness of these issues, but inspire people to take action to help create a better future for those affected.”

As a child, Lennon famously used to jump over the wall into the Strawberry Field grounds, where he would play with the children who lived there and listen to The Salvation Army band. He grew up just a stone’s throw away from the site in Woolton, Liverpool, which has lain unused for 12 years.

He remained a supporter of The Salvation Army, with a particular interest in Strawberry Field throughout his life, donating several thousands of pounds to the charity after the song’s release.
Paul O’Grady, supporter of The Salvation Army, said: “It is truly shocking to know the disadvantage that young people with learning disabilities face.

“I’m sure John Lennon would be smiling down on this project. As the song lyrics say, ‘Living is easy with eyes closed’ – hopefully this campaign will open people’s eyes so they see the many individuals living alongside us that aren’t being given the support they need to thrive and flourish.”

The Salvation Army is now calling on anyone interested in making a difference to the lives of these young people to help revive the iconic location through a £2m public fundraising campaign, which will allow Strawberry Field to open its doors to the public for the first time ever.

The inspirational choir was joined at Abbey Road by special guest photographer Mike McCartney, former front man of pop band The Scaffold and younger brother of Beatle Paul. He has been involved in the Strawberry Field project from its early days.

Mike said, “I wanted to capture the choir coming off the bus and walking across the famous zebra crossing, but they were on a mission – I almost missed them! They couldn’t wait to get to the studio and get in there. There was some apprehension in their faces, but it was special watching them grow in confidence throughout the day. In the end, they delivered the goods. It was a joyous day.”
Funds raised will create a training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities; a new, visitor experience on the place, the song and Lennon’s early life around Strawberry Field; and the development of a haven for spiritual exploration.

Signed Cynthia Lennon print on auction to benefit St Thomas Lupus Trust

The St Thomas Lupus trust is auctioning a special one-off signed print of the Beatles by Cynthia Lennon.

The original painting of the Beatles was inspired by the song 'Your mother should know' when it appeared in the film the Magical Mystery Tour, written by Paul McCartney. In the film the Beatles, wearing white tuxedos, come down a grand staircase followed by boy scouts.

Cynthia kindly gave permission for the image to be used to raise funds for the St Thomas Lupus Trust. The trust has produced Beatles notelets, still available in their online shop.

The charity is linked to the Beatles through the song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'. Fans around the world know about how Julian Lennon had a childhood friend, Lucy Vodden and drew a picture of her. His father, John Lennon, saw the picture and it led to him writing the now iconic song. When Lucy lost her battle with lupus in 2009 aged just 46, she was a staunch supporter of the St Thomas Lupus Trust.

This very special auction will end on 31st October which marks the last day of Lupus Awareness month in the UK. 100% of money raised at the auctions goes directly to support the charity.

View and bid on the signed print by visiting the Ebay auction site.

Painting by the Beatles Inspires 'Art in a Corner' Charity Event

ART IN A CORNER is endorsed by Paul McCartney and supported by Ringo Starr.

ART IN A CORNER
Inspired by the only known painting ever made by The Beatles.

Tokyo, 1966: The Beatles create Images of a Woman, the only painting they ever made.

50 years later, some of the biggest names in music - including Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello and The Bootleg Beatles - have followed in The Beatles footsteps to create their own versions of this unique piece of music history.

Project poster by artist Paul Skellett
The project is organised in support of Children & the Arts and Youth Music, two charities working with over 100,000 children and young people each year.

Exclusive, limited edition prints and posters are available to order now via http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/artinacorner with much more to come over the coming weeks.

About the project

The paintings will be shown in a series of exhibitions across the UK - held throughout September and October, 2016 - before being sold in support of these two charities:

Exhibited artwork will also include archive photos of The Beatles’ 1966 tour of Japan by renowned British photographer Robert Whitaker.

About the Beatles' Painting Images of a Woman (1966)
The only known painting The Beatles ever made, Images of a Woman’ was painted on tour in Japan, in 1966. It’s amazing to think that this incredible, abstract composition was painted by the ‘Fab Four’ simply to pass the time.

The Beatles arrived in Tokyo ready to play three concerts at Budakon, Japan’s premier martial arts arena. Because of security fears for the band’s safety and protests against their intrusion into such an iconic Japanese institution, all four were kept on lockdown inside the Tokyo Hilton between shows.

To keep them entertained, manager Brian Epstein brought in a set of art supplies, laid a large paper canvas on a table and placed a lamp in the centre. He then left four of the most famous men in the world to get creative.

The Statue 4 Eppy Concert Announced

The Statue 4 Eppy Concert Announced To Raise Funds For Brian Epstein Statue. Also Official Launch of Campaign Single ‘Our Friend’.
_______________________________________________________________________________

A star-studded concert on Saturday 28 February 2015 at Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre is the latest fundraiser in the high profile Statue 4 Eppy campaign.

This is latest move by organisers to both continue to raise the profile of the campaign and boost funds to create a statue in honour of legendary Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein in his hometown of Liverpool.

Brian Epstein took four Liverpool young performers and shaped their careers into the biggest pop band in the world, the rest they say is history.

Now a group of Liverpool campaigners are working tirelessly to raise £70,000 to have Brian’s amazing efforts formally recognised with a permanent statue in Liverpool. It will be created by acclaimed sculptor Tom Murphy, who also created a statue of John Lennon, which stands proud in Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The Statue 4 Eppy Concert will take place on Saturday 28 February 2015 at the Epstein Theatre in Liverpool hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Billy Butler– It’s a fitting venue as the theatre is named after the legendary Beatles Manager.

The show will celebrate the life and career of ‘Fifth Beatle’ Brian Epstein through an evening of  music. The first names on the bill to be announced are iconic Liverpool artists Ian Prowse, Ian McNabb and Billy Kinsley & Tony Crane. More names will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets are priced at £20 and are on sale now from the Epstein Theatre box office.

The date of the concert is one of particular significance as it also marks the official release of the recently recorded single, Our Friend, official song of the campaign.

The song has been written by Statue 4 Eppy campaigner, Bob Pitt, and includes the voices of acclaimed Liverpool artistes Ian McNabb, Andy McCluskey, Beryl Marsden and Ian Prowse, who are joined by guest celebrities including Tricia Penrose, psychic Derek Acorah, and actors Paul Barber and John McArdle. The song also features Billy J Kramer, who was managed by Brian at the height of the Merseybeat era.

Brian Epstein was very influential within the thriving music industry of the 1960s in both Liverpool and London. But it was that lunchtime concert in the Cavern Club featuring four young Liverpool men that would change their lives, Brian’s life, and musical history forever. He spotted a special talent, nurtured it, and it was a career which would take Brian and The Beatles onto a global stage and brought with it worldwide fame.

This year has seen a lot of recognition for Epstein. The music genius was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after a campaign from fans; a commemorative Blue Plaque was unveiled at the London offices of Epstein’s company NEMS; and the play Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles ran for six weeks at Leicester Square Theatre in London’s West End. Brian would have also celebrated his 80th birthday in September.

Statue 4 Eppy’s Fiona Williams said: “Brian Epstein remains one of the most influential people in the history of modern music. He was a complete visionary who achieved so much during his short life. It is incredible that he still has not been officially honoured or recognised by the city or the people of Liverpool.

“Our campaign to create a permanent statue, with the expert help of sculptor Tom Murphy, is our opportunity to say thank you to Brian. The single, Our Friend, will be released on the same day as our Concert 4 Eppy, the proceeds of both will go towards the statue fund. We’d encourage music enthusiasts who have ever enjoyed a Beatles or Merseybeat song to support us.”

The Statue 4 Eppy organisers are interested in hearing from individuals or organisations who would like to get involved in the campaign as a sponsor. To find out more email statue4eppy@yahoo.com.
