Review: We All Want a Yellow Submarine!

Lego recently released a new Beatles Yellow Submarine set and asked the British Beatles Fan Club if we wanted to help them get the word out.  In exchange we were given a dedicated link for our members to use when they order that benefits our club.  They also sent us one to review.

Yesterday it arrived and I am wowed!  The set includes over 500 pieces packed into 5 numbered packets along with a diagram book that walks you through the construction piece by piece.  I have never had a Lego set like this before but even with my lack of experience, I had no issues following the diagrams and in 2 and a half hours I had assembled the entire project.  It was fantastic fun and I'm impressed with the finished product as it is full of detail.

On the outside there are moving propellers, periscopes, colorful artwork and designs as well as a stand to display the finished product, but the inside is just as detailed.  The middle can lift off to expose the inner workings which has a pilot seat, steering wheel, and controls and dials.

Behind the pilot seat is room for the remaining 3 Beatles to sit as well.

Each of the four Beatles figures also have to be assembled and each has something to hold when standing.  Those items need to be stored when they are sitting and another part of the submarine, a sort of submarine boot, also opens to store those item.

Additionally there is a Jeremy figure who has place to stand on the display base.


The quality of this set is high.  All decorations are stamped on - no stickers to fall off over time - and the pieces all fit together nicely.

This set is sure to make a bit hit this holiday season and would be a fun project for a family assemble together while listening to Beatles music.

Review: Visualising the Beatles - It's a winner!

With every new Beatles book these days, my first thought is always - is there anything new or different about this one?

Well here we have a new book, bringing The Beatles into the 21^st century with a book that tells their story via the 14 studio albums from “Please Please Me” to “Let it Be”.

The book is filled with wonderful infographics and gives key information about each album such as who wrote which song, the chart positions of the album in various countries across the world, how many lead vocals each Beatle had, and which key each song is played in to name but a few.

Once you work out how the book works, it becomes an easy reference book for any Beatles fan.

Combined with a timeline of what was happening in the world when each album was released, this makes for an interesting read.

The book includes a small piece of the Greek islands The Beatles were planning to buy in 1967 as well as a list of albums made by each solo Beatle and a list (in very small print as there are so many) of stars who have covered Beatles songs, which is probably already out of date as I write this as someone somewhere is probably recording one right now!

For those Beatle fans who know the story inside out, there is still something to learn from the book.

However, I feel this book will have great appeal to any new generation Beatle fan as it tells their story simply and includes these wonderful infographics and data which would appeal to certainly the younger generation of today, and even some of us oldies.

At 250 pages this is well written and researched and I’m sure will be a smash hit with Beatle fans both young and old.

Visualising the Beatles London book launch November 15

If you plan to be in London on November 15, stop by the Waterstones on Tottenham Court road at 6:30pm for the launch of a new Beatles book called "Visualising the Beatles."  There will be live music and the book looks interesting.  The BBFC will be reviewing it in our next quarterly magazine, but if you are looking for ideas for Christmas gifts, you might want to go along and check it out in person since our review won't be published until January.

The publisher describes the the book as "... the story of the Beatles told as never before. Signed Cynthia Lennon print on auction to benefit St Thomas Lupus Trust

The St Thomas Lupus trust is auctioning a special one-off signed print of the Beatles by Cynthia Lennon.

The original painting of the Beatles was inspired by the song 'Your mother should know' when it appeared in the film the Magical Mystery Tour, written by Paul McCartney. In the film the Beatles, wearing white tuxedos, come down a grand staircase followed by boy scouts.

Cynthia kindly gave permission for the image to be used to raise funds for the St Thomas Lupus Trust. The trust has produced Beatles notelets, still available in their online shop.

The charity is linked to the Beatles through the song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'. Fans around the world know about how Julian Lennon had a childhood friend, Lucy Vodden and drew a picture of her. His father, John Lennon, saw the picture and it led to him writing the now iconic song. When Lucy lost her battle with lupus in 2009 aged just 46, she was a staunch supporter of the St Thomas Lupus Trust.

This very special auction will end on 31st October which marks the last day of Lupus Awareness month in the UK. 100% of money raised at the auctions goes directly to support the charity.

Hand painted replicas of 1960's Beatles poster by the man who did the originals

Back in August we alerted our readers to an exhibition of posters in Liverpool recreated by the man who did the originals.  During International Beatleweek we visited the exhibit and it was absolutely wonderful!

In the 1960's Tony Booth was the original artist for The Beatles and Brian Epstein where he produced hundreds of the original gig posters and signs round Liverpool during the Merseybeat era.

At the time when the gigs were over,  they would be ripped down off the walls and replaced with the next one for the next week.  No one at the time realized that they were valuable memorabilia. Only one original has miraculously survived.

Lucky for us, the artist, Tony Booth, has painstakingly recreated each and every hand painted poster all over again.  These hand painted posters are available for sale but also available are signed prints made from the hand painted versions.

At the exhibit it was fascinating wandering around and reading each poster and admiring the skill and precision of Mr. Booth's work.  We also watched a video which you can watch below.

The exhibit will end this month but the posters can still be viewed and purchased from his website. Please have a look.

Members: Send Us Your Photos!

The British Beatles Fan Club is cooking up a new project for our members and it will only work with your help.

It has been a big year for Beatles events.  Not only have Paul and Ringo both been touring but many of our members have attended festivals, tribute concerts, stage productions and film premieres all over the world. 

We know you took pictures of you and your friends throughout the year and we thought it would be a fab idea to gather these photos together into a BBFC calendar for 2017.

This will be a two step effort:

• Part 1: We need to collect enough photos.  So start sending them in today.  Email them to website@britishbeatlesfanclub.co.uk with the title "Calendar Photos". 

• Part 2: Assuming we receive enough photo contributions, we will advertise for calendar pre-orders.  We will need a minimum number of orders to keep the price down and if we get enough pre-orders, we will produce the calendar filled with your photos of you and your fellow BBFC members.
