As we have previously reported, John Lennon's first home -- 9 Newcastle Road, Wavertree -- is up for sale and today we were allowed inside for a look around!
Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photographs of any of the interior so we can't share images of the many gorgeous original features and fittings. Take our word, though, that they're there -- including the bannister, some original flooring, many of the windows, the really lovely ceiling roses, the fireplaces, and (my personal favourite) the pantry.
The house needs a bit of work before anyone could move in, but it's got MASSIVE potential and you can easily see that it would make a truly beautiful home.
What was most exciting though -- as a fan of the Beatles and of John -- was that there are so many original features that it's not at all hard to imagine the house as it was when John was there.
So this is a chance to not just imagine yourself owning John Lennon's first home, but also to imagine yourself living in John's home.
This iconic three-bedroom terraced house was the home where, from his very first days, John Lennon lived and where his mother Julia started to bring up her first-born baby boy. Her musical and artistic talents, her quirky personality, her quick wit and her attitude to authority together with her off-beat approach to life provided the earliest influences that helped to shape the musical legend whose genius is still recognized throughout the world.
Born on the 9th October 1940, John Lennon started his life in this suburban red brick terraced house living with his mother, grandparents and his sea-going father.
Numerous events throughout John Lennon's life were connected with the number 9. John Lennon has been quoted as saying: "I lived in 9 Newcastle Road. I was born on the 9 of October. It's just a number that follows me around … "
Newcastle Road is located in the famous Penny Lane area of Liverpool, which created the inspiration for many of John Lennon's most evocative songs. The most obvious connection is the eponymous song "Penny Lane". Many of the landmarks mentioned in the song are just a few minute's walk from his childhood home. Visitors still flock to visit these sites and other local landmarks world-famous for their John Lennon and Beatles connections.
9 Newcastle Road is a friendly south-facing bay-fronted traditional terraced house. On the ground floor, a bright vestibule then hallway lead to the south-facing front family room, rear sitting room then to the generous eat-in kitchen-diner. Stairs lead up to the landing, off which there are three bedrooms and the family bathroom.
The walled back-yard is accessed from the kitchen or via a gated alleyway.
This is a very rare opportunity to own an important piece of history. Viewing is highly recommended.
Viewing appointments will be arranged at set times due to the world-wide interest this unique property is expected to generate.
All interested parties are advised that the property will be sold by Auction at The Cavern Club, 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool, L2 6RE on 29th October 2013 at 6.30pm. The Epstein Theatre Celebrates Brian's Birthday!
by Donna Jackson
The theatre's annual Open Day honoured Brian and also raised money for Macmillan Cancer Research by participating in Britain’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Tea, coffee and delicious cakes -- many of whom were generously donated by local businesses -- were available with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Research.
Happy Birthday to Brian from the Beatles Story! |
Joe Flannery, lifelong friend of Brian and author of the autobiographical, "Standing in the Wings – The Beatles, Brian Epstein and me" was in attendance, and Andrew Lancel, who recently played the part of Brian in "Epstein" to nightly standing ovations, popped in to join in the celebrations too!
Brian looking down on Joe Flannery and Andrew Lancel |
One of the highlights of the day was the Theatre Tour. My tour guide, Angela, was great, describing the history of the theatre -- how it was originally built by the Cranes for their own private use, how they donated it to the city, and why the name was changed to the Neptune, and then to the Epstein Theatre. The latter was not just because of Brian's immense contributions to Liverpool's music history, or because of his well-known love of the theatre but also because, in his youth, Brian had worked as an usher at the theatre!
Today's theatre tour. Although the 'N' over the stage commemorates the theatre's history as the Neptune, for many Beatles fans, including myself, it honours the 'Nemperor' |
As well as providing details of the theatre's fascinating history, Angela pointed out some of the special features of the Epstein -- for example, it's one of the few remaining theatres with a sloping stage -- and told us of some of the ghosts (all friendly!) who are regular visitors.
The Epstein Theatre's sloping stage. |
It was also great to be allowed a rare glimpse of the back-stage area, including the dressing rooms, the green room and some of the costumes that are being gathered for this year's Pantomine (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs).

Epstein Theatre, Liverpool, to Host Special Celebration for Brian's Birthday!
Epstein Theatre announces a very special annual Open Day with charity Birthday Tea for Brian
Epstein Theatre Open Day
(Hanover St, Liverpool City Centre)
Thursday 19 September 2013, 10am-4pm
________________________________________________________________
On Thursday, Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre will once again
throw open its doors to the public for a now annual Open Day in honour of the
late Mr. Brian Epstein’s Birthday. The 2013 Open Day, which is extra special
this year as the theatre celebrates its centenary year, will take place on
Thursday 19th September, which would have been Brian’s
79th Birthday. In 2012, hundreds of people from all over Liverpool
and beyond attended on the day and theatre management are expecting an even
better turn out this year!
The Epstein theatre will this year celebrate Brian’s Birthday
with a very special birthday tea in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research, as
part of Britain’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The public can come along and
enjoy a free cup of coffee or tea and for a small donation, a delicious
range of sweet treats and cakes generously provided by local suppliers. All
donations will go to Macmillan Cancer Research. Visitors are also encouraged to
bring a cake and a special prize will be given for the most tastiest cake.
On the day, the theatre will be open from 10am to 4pm
and as well as Brian’s Birthday Tea the day will feature tours of the theatre
where the public can explore the beauty of the venue such as the picturesque
foyer, bar and auditorium. This day also launched the theatre's Autumn season
and those attending can pick up the brand new brochure hot off the
press.
Joe Flannery, lifelong friend of Brian and Beatles
Tour Manager will also be in attendance throughout the day and his new
autobiographical book ‘Standing in the Wings – The Beatles, Brian Epstein
and me’ can be purchased (priced at £18) and personally signed by Joe on
the day.
Those attending can also enjoy numerous musical performances
from live bands representing the musical influences that Epstein managed.
While enjoying the music, visitors will also have a chance to view an
exhibition of photographs taken over the theatre’s 100 year history in
this, its centenary year.
There will be raffle prizes up for grabs throughout the day,
including tickets for several great shows at the venue and delicious cakes from
Dafna’s (Smithdown Road) and The Cake Shop (Central Station).
Rebekah Pichilingi, General Manager at the Epstein
Theatre said: “We can’t wait to welcome customers new and old as we
celebrate Brian's Birthday and support Macmillan Cancer Research by bringing
cake & eating cake! It’s also a chance to browse through our new autumn
brochure, listen to live music, meet Joe Flannery and explore our beautiful
theatre.”
On this special day, there’s lots for the public to enjoy
right in the heart of Liverpool City Centre.

About The Epstein
Theatre
The Epstein Theatre (formerly
known as The Neptune) was originally opened as Crane’s Music Hall in 1911, and
was a popular location for recitals and performances. It was renamed Crane
Theatre in 1938. In 1967 the theatre was purchased from the Cranes by Liverpool
Corporation, who decided that the theatre should be run by local people for
local people and was named The Neptune Theatre. The Neptune also became a comedy
club and after many years of uncertainty about the future of the theatre, it
eventually closed in 2005. In July 2011, a £1million refurbishment of the
theatre was completed which saw the Hanover Street venue brought up to
21st century standards and renamed ‘The Epstein Theatre’ in honour of
former Beatles manager Brian Epstein, who guided the Fab Four from popular
cellar act to global superstardom. The management contract was up for tender
and was won by the well established team behind Liverpool’s annual Sound City
Music Festival. The Sound City team outlined plans to use the building to
showcase cutting edge art and pop culture events ranging from drama productions
to art exhibitions, and also aim to ensure the Epstein can be utilised by
community groups from across the city. The Theatre was officially opened on
Wednesday 9th May 2012.
About Brian
Epstein
Brian Epstein’s had an illustrious career from his drama school days to managing the world’s biggest
pop group. His short life was crammed with success and controversy; an
intelligent man whose presence, taste, vision and passion left a lifelong impact
on the world. Born in Liverpool on 19 September 1934 to Jewish descent, the
cool, modern, urbane and gay, Brian spent his early adult life working for the
family business NEMS (North End Music Stores), between being drafted into
the Royal Army Service Corps and moving to London to join RADA and live a more
openly gay life. He returned to Liverpool to manage the new NEMS city centre
music store making it one of the biggest in the North. Not long after was the
historic lunchtime visit to the famous Cavern Club to hear four Liverpool lads
perform and the rest was history. Brian died in August 1967 of an accidental
overdose at the age of 32
